Preparing for Pregnancy

When preparing for pregnancy, some women may need a little help with cycle regulation, uterus strengthening, or liver and adrenal support for the most optimal outcomes. Here, I will list for you a very simple description of the most accessible fertility herbs to consider. As with any herbs, it is best to work with a Naturopathic doctor or herbalist before trying anything new for the most safe and effective dosing. In addition, if you work with someone who has the ability to formulate herbal teas, you can have them make a unique blend of some of the herbs listed below that most resonate with you. The source I love to use for female herbs preparations is the book by Susan Weed, “Wise woman herbal for the childbearing years”. The following herbs are from this resource, in addition to information attained through my education.

Herbal Medicine

**Red Clover Flowers are high in protein, vitamin, and mineral content and help restore balance to female hormones. They also provide nutrients to the uterus. You can combine an infusion of one ounce Red Clover and one teaspoon peppermint to one quart of water for four hours. Drink throughout day and continue this for months.

**Nettle leaves are used as a general nourishing herb that doubles as a uterine tonic. It can strengthen the kidneys and adrenals, too. You can drink one or more cups daily for several months before conceiving.

**Red Raspberry leaves are used as a uterine tonic and contain high levels of calcium. Add half an ounce of Red Raspberry to the same amount of Red Clover in a quart of water and infuse for four hours. Drink throughout day and continue this for months.

**Dong Quai is used by women for low vitality, fatigue, and irregular menses. Also, it is used for endometriosis with dark, sluggish menstrual flow. It is best taken between ovulation and menstruation but stop taking it once your menstrual flow begins. This supplement should not be used when bleeding is heavy, if there is a history of spontaneous abortion, or with blood thinners. It should only be used in combination with other herbs.

**False Unicorn is used as a uterine tonic. It is powerful and influences the ovaries. This herb is taken in tincture form at only five to fifteen drops per day.

Vitex (Chaste Berry) is used as an aphrodisiac, for nutritional support, and for menstrual and hormonal balance. It has a lowering effect on prolactin levels, improves menstrual regularities, and improves fertility. It should be avoided if pregnant. It is best to take this in the morning. It is also great for use to address low progesterone, PMS, PMDD, oligomenorrhea, cyclic mastalgia, menopause, and PCOS.
